Her journey began in the early 1950s at Auburn University in Alabama, where she served as a graduate teaching assistant for two years. Those formative years set the tone for everything that followed. Dr. Saunders understood early that teaching was not simply about delivering information but about lighting a path for others to walk. From there, she carried her growing expertise to Ohio Northern University as an instructor from 1954 to 1955, then to the Fort Hawkins School from 1955 to 1956, and on to Talbot County High School from 1956 to 1957. Each role added depth to her understanding of how people learn and how educators can rise to meet them.

Dr. Saunders eventually found a lasting home at the University of West Georgia, where her steady climb through the academic ranks tells a story of persistence and excellence. She joined as an instructor from 1965 to 1974, advanced to assistant professor from 1974 to 1985, and reached associate professor from 1985 to 1993 before retiring as a full professor in 1995. Across more than forty years, she earned the respect of colleagues and the admiration of countless students who passed through her classrooms.

Her credentials reflect a relentless commitment to scholarship. Dr. Saunders earned a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University, a Master of Arts from Auburn University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Georgia State University. These achievements were never endpoints but tools, sharpened and put to work in service of her students and her field. She embodied the idea that the finest educators remain lifelong learners themselves.

Retirement, for Dr. Saunders, was never an ending. It marked the beginning of a new chapter defined by service. She poured her energy into her local community through the Carrollton Lit-Mu Club, the Sixth District of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the Carrollton Civic Woman’s Club, where she rose through the ranks as second vice president, first vice president, and finally president between 2000 and 2006. Her leadership extended further still, as she once served as president of both the Georgia League of Women Voters and the Carroll County League of Women Voters, championing civic engagement and the democratic process.

Recognition followed naturally from such dedicated work. Dr. Saunders received the Women Making History in Education Award from the West Georgia National Organization of Women and the Woman of Achievement Award from the Business and Professional Women of Carroll County. Her civic affiliations brought additional honors, including the Humanitarian Award from the Carrollton Sertoma Club and the Thanks Badge from the Pine Valley chapter of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. The University of West Georgia National Alumni Association presented her with the J. Owen Moore Faculty Award, and in 1992 she was honored in the 23rd edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
