Dr. Paul D. Winchester has built a distinguished career in neonatology and pediatric care over more than four decades. Known for his deep commitment to infants and children, he has earned respect as a leader in the care of newborns who need specialized medical attention. His work has shaped neonatal medicine through clinical innovation, strong academic involvement, and a steady focus on improving outcomes for vulnerable patients.
Dr. Winchester currently serves as Professor of Neonatology at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis. He is also an attending neonatologist at St. Francis Hospital in Indiana. Since 1981, he has remained at the front of neonatal acute care, bringing skill, experience, and careful judgment to every stage of treatment. His approach to medicine is both thorough and practical. He is recognized for placing strong value on a patient’s medical history and for emphasizing preventive care as an important part of treatment.
His academic path reflects a broad and accomplished foundation. Dr. Winchester earned a Bachelor of Arts in experimental psychology from Stanford University in 1970. He went on to receive a Master of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1972. He later completed his medical training at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, where he finished his internship and residency in pediatrics in 1979 and his fellowship in neonatology in 1981. This combination of psychological study, pediatric training, and neonatal specialization helped shape the thoughtful and comprehensive perspective he brought to his medical career.
Dr. Winchester holds board certification in pediatrics as well as neonatal and perinatal medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and serves as a Clinical Professor with the Indiana University School of Medicine. His professional affiliations also include Riley Hospital, Eskenazi Hospital, and Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. In addition, he is a PALS provider and an NRP instructor and provider, roles that reflect his dedication to high standards in emergency and newborn resuscitation care.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Winchester is noted as the first neonatologist to practice outside Denver, Colorado. In 1981, he developed the first Level III NICU outside Denver in Colorado, a major achievement that had an immediate and measurable impact. Within six months, survival rates for very low birth-weight babies tripled. This milestone stands as one of the clearest examples of his ability to turn clinical vision into life-saving results.
His career also includes important work in education, transport medicine, and program development. He helped develop a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program with Marsha London, RN, at Beth-El School of Nursing in Colorado Springs. He was a member of the first neonatal transport team for Fort Carson Army Mast Helicopters, as well as Mayo fixed-wing medical transports. He also contributed to a neonatal fellowship program with Beth Murdoch and Bill Haye, MD, at the University of Colorado Medical Center. In addition, he helped create resuscitation and intubation labs for the Southern Colorado Family Practice Program in Pueblo, helping expand critical care training for medical professionals.
