Her academic path reflected that same steady drive. After graduating from high school, she attended Troy University and earned her Bachelor of Science in 1959. She then continued her studies at Auburn University, where she received a Master of Science in 1963. Rather than seeing education as something that ends with a diploma, Dr. Mixson embraced it as a lifelong calling. She went on to earn a PhD from Florida State University in 1972 and later pursued postdoctoral coursework at Troy State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Mixson built a career that reflected both scholarly achievement and deep service to others. She began as an English teacher at Dothan High School, where she taught from 1959 to 1966. Her leadership continued to grow when she joined Wallace State Community College in Dothan as an English instructor and assistant academic dean. In 1983, she became Academic Dean, a position she held until her retirement in 1996.

Her influence reached far beyond the classroom. Dr. Mixson also served as interim president of Alabama Aviation College in Ozark and of Wallace State Community College. She contributed to the wider educational community through her work on the advisory board of the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Auburn University. She also served as coordinator of the Professional Development Task Force of the Alabama Community College System. These roles speak to the trust others placed in her wisdom, leadership, and vision.
