Dr. Janet S. Butel, Ph.D., is a trailblazing virologist whose illustrious career spanned five decades at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Retiring in 2018 as a Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Dr. Butel left an indelible mark on the fields of virology, cancer research, and medical education. Beginning her career at Baylor in 1968 as an assistant professor, she quickly rose through the ranks to become a full professor by 1976. Over the years, she held several prestigious positions, including Distinguished Service Professor, Joseph L. Melnick Professor of Virology, and Kyle and Josephine Morrow Chair. She also served as Chair of the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology, Director of the Baylor-UT Houston Center for AIDS Research, and Leader of a research program in the Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, among other leadership roles. Her contributions extended beyond Baylor, as she served on numerous scientific boards and councils, including the American Cancer Society, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Association for Cancer Research.

Dr. Butel is renowned for her fundamental research on tumor viruses and their mechanisms of causing cancer. Among her most notable achievements is her work on a viral contaminant in the early live polio vaccine, which she cites as a career highlight. Her research has significantly advanced the understanding of virology and its implications for human health. Over the course of her career, she authored more than 300 scientific papers, review articles, and book chapters, contributing extensively to the body of knowledge in virology and microbiology. From 1987 to 2013, she served as the contributing editor for the virology section of nine editions of Medical Microbiology and held editorial board positions for various scientific journals from 1976 to 2018.

A dedicated mentor, Dr. Butel trained approximately 50 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions to science and medicine. She was the first woman at Baylor College of Medicine to be awarded an endowed professorship, chair an academic unit, and be designated a Distinguished Service Professor, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in science. Her exceptional contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including continuous NIH research grants from 1973 to 2015, the Women in Cancer Research-Charlotte Friend Memorial Lectureship in 2007, the BioHouston Women in Science Award in 2013, and recognition at the Harris County Medical Society’s Women in Health & Medical Science Gala in 2014. In 2017, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner declared January 6th as Dr. Janet Butel Day in her honor. She was also interviewed for the Texas Medical Center Women’s History Project in 2015 and received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.

Dr. Butel’s journey into science began with her fascination for chemistry in high school, which led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, from Kansas State University in 1963. She earned her Ph.D. with honors from Baylor University in 1966 as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine from 1966 to 1968, marking the start of her lifelong association with the institution. She has been an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Virology, the American Society for Cell Biology, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.

Born in Overbrook, Kansas, to Floyd Charles Butel and Bernice Humbert, Dr. Butel has been married to Dr. David Yates Graham since 1967. Together, they have two children, Kathleen Lomax, M.D., and David P. Graham, M.D., and are proud grandparents to twin granddaughters. In her free time, Dr. Butel enjoys gardening and remains active in her field by writing papers and participating in Zoom seminars and meetings. Her career is a testament to her unwavering dedication to science, education, and mentorship. Through her pioneering research, leadership, and advocacy for women in science, Dr. Butel has left an enduring impact on the scientific community and beyond. Even in retirement, she continues to inspire through her ongoing contributions to virology and her commitment to advancing knowledge.
