For nearly forty years, he has answered the call to Christian ministry, and in doing so he has touched congregations, communities, and countless individuals who needed a steady hand and a hopeful word. His story is one of faith lived out daily, of leadership offered without fanfare, and of a legacy built brick by brick through genuine devotion to others.
As the cousin of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rev. Dr. King carries a name woven into the very fabric of American history. Yet he has never leaned on that connection for recognition. Instead, he has honored it through his own work, serving as an active member of the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Commission since its founding in 1985. He also represents the state of Ohio on the National Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Advisory Committee in Atlanta, Georgia. In these roles, he keeps a dream alive, reminding new generations that justice and dignity remain worthy pursuits.
His pastoral journey shows the heart of a true shepherd. In 1992, he answered the call to lead the Jerusalem Second Baptist Church in Urbana, Ohio, where he faithfully guided the congregation for more than thirteen years. Before that season, he served as an associate minister at both Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Mansfield and Union Grove Baptist Church in Columbus. Today he continues this devotion as an associate minister of the Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Columbus. Each of these chapters reflects a man committed not to titles, but to the people sitting in the pews and the souls within his care.
The reach of his service extends far beyond the walls of any single church. He has given his time to the board of trustees of Directions for Youth and Family Services, served as financial secretary of the Columbus Baptist Pastors Conference, and contributed as a member of the Urbana Ministerial Alliance. He has sat on the board of advisors of the Black Church website and the Columbus NAACP, presided over the National Action Network Columbus Chapter, and chaired the Baptist Housing Alliance of Ohio. In earlier years, he held leadership in the Western Union Baptist District Association, the Ohio Baptist General Convention, and the Columbus Baptist Ministerial Alliance. This long list of responsibilities reveals a simple truth: when there was work to be done for the community, Rev. Dr. King stepped forward.
His faith has carried him across oceans as well. In February of 2001, he traveled to Hyderabad, India, in support of Global Gospel Ministries, a missionary organization sponsored by sixty-one pastors from the United States who set out to build one thousand Christian churches in India. In recognition of the support offered through his leadership, Jerusalem Second Baptist had four churches named in its honor. That gesture stands as a lasting symbol of how local faithfulness can ripple outward to bless lives a world away.
Closer to home, Rev. Dr. King has stood beside those who protect and serve. After spending a year as chaplain of the Columbus Fire and Police Departments, he was appointed in March of 2001 as chaplain of the Gahanna Police Department, a role he continues to hold. Walking alongside officers in their most difficult moments takes a special kind of courage and compassion, and he has offered both freely. In October of 2007, he was elected to the Columbus Community Action Board, now known as IMPACT, and in 2009 he was chosen as first vice president of the State of Ohio Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. Through every appointment, he kept the same heart of a servant.
His personal path reminds us that meaningful leadership often grows from ordinary beginnings and steady perseverance. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in accounting from Cecil’s Business College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and continued his learning as a part-time student at Ohio Dominican College in Columbus. For more than twenty-three years he worked at the United Parcel Service, rising from driver to supervisor to manager before retirement. That blend of discipline, hard work, and humility shaped the man who would one day guide so many others. He never asked anyone to climb a hill he had not first walked himself.
Faith also sustained him through deep personal loss. Together with his late wife, Nancy R. Hayes-King, he built a family rooted in love, and they raised one son, Marcus Isaiah. Through joy and sorrow alike, his trust in God remained the anchor that held everything steady. There is something deeply moving about a person who continues to pour into others even while carrying private grief, and his example offers quiet encouragement to anyone facing hardship.
What makes the life of Rev. Dr. Joel L. King, Jr. so inspiring is not the length of his résumé, impressive as it is, but the spirit behind it.
